So the news came down today that Mark Teixeira (read story), arguably the best hitting free-agent position player available, has just signed with none other than the New York freakin Yankees!! Here’s what bugs me…I can honestly say that I haven’t been following the “Hot Stove” scene much this off-season, because quite frankly, it’s been a little more on the cold side than hot. This story however comes out that Boston is the apparent “front runners” in the bidding for Teixeira and all signs pointed to the Yankees not even putting in an offer for him. Having just gone out and spent a boat load of money for two top notch starting pitchers in CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett (I’m still not sold on Burnett), my thought was maybe they have already done their high profile spending for the offseason.
I forgot that there really is no ceiling when it comes to the Yankee check book and out of nowhere they come and scoop up Teixeira for 8 years at 180 Million. I mean when you are paying almost $30 million in luxury tax penalties alone, I guess you just have it.
I could ramble on and on…..I’m just disgusted.

Sports is supposed to be about competition, not who has the biggest bank account. The Sox have produced most of their stars from the farm system, not the auction block.

I’m a Mets fan but you can’t blame the Yankees for spending money. All their doing is investing it back into their own company. I think it’s time MLB discuss a salary cap and more effective revenue sharing. That will level the playing field, like what we see in the NFL.

Kerel – I couldn’t agree with you more. The NFL (viewed as a business model) does seem to have the financials thing figured out. I don’t blame the Yankees since they technically aren’t breaking any rules, but like you said, when does MLB step in and correct salaries?? 10 years down the road…will everyone be making 20+ million a year???
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

Well lets see what a half billion dollars gets em’. I’ll laugh by butt off if they don’t win the ring. That would be SWEEEEET. You had to love the “Rays” getting to the big dance this year with a total team salary that was less than one player on the Yankees.
